There is an author in our midst, and I’m sure you all remember her. Susan Fulwiler Fister, friend to all, and now the author of “The Best Year”, a compelling debut that traces the evolution of a relationships within a Texas family.

As our new year kicks off, now would be a great time to pick-up a copy of this gripping and emotional book that includes the early years, growing up in Dallas and attending Hillcrest High, on through the family building years with husband Lynn Fister, also a Hillcrest Alumn, and then into the heart of the story and the relationship that evolved with Lynn’s father, O.J., a curmudgeonly old man that ruled his family as well as those around him with an iron fist.

Appalling drunk driving statistics warn us about year-round safety, especially during the holidays, the most dangerous time of the year to drive. The holiday period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is the deadliest on U.S. roads. In 2007, there were 4,242 deaths attributed to drunk driving. Texas ranks 47th among states in drunk driving fatalities, with 1,292 people killed by drunk driving in 2007.

Texans share the roads with 124,662 people who have three or more drunk driving convictions. We share the roads with 18,271 drivers who have five or more drunk driving convictions.

Buckling up is the best defense against a drunk driving crash.

Designate a sober driver before you head out to holiday parties and gatherings. Social host laws hold part hosts liable and responsible for what happens on their property, whether the hosts are present or not.

Check "http://www.madd.org" for details, and have a safe and happy holiday season.

During November and December, spirits are high, celebrations abound and travel increases on America's roads. Unfortunately, drunk driving is usually on the rise as well. That’s why during the winter holiday season, MADD conducts the Tie One On for Safety (TOOFS) public awareness campaign.

Tie One On for Safety asks Americans to place a MADD ribbon or window decal on their vehicles or tie one to their car keys as a pledge to drive safe, sober and buckled up during the holidays and throughout the year. It also reminds other drivers and passengers to do the same. Our message includes safety belts because they’re the best defense against a drunk driver.

For TOOFS materials, please contact your local affiliate.
